Wide-Area Bonjour browsing

If you want to see Wide-Area Bonjour browsing in action without having to install the Preference Pane / Control Panel, you can do that just by entering an appropriate DNS search domain.

Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger

Open "System Preferences" and click on "Network". Enter "dns-sd.org" in the Search Domains field and click "Apply Now". Now when you look in Safari you should see additional (non-local) services discovered in the Bonjour list:

Windows XP and 2000/2003

Just follow the steps below to add a DNS search domain (what Microsoft calls a "DNS suffix"):

  1. Click "start"
  2. Select "Control Panel"
  3. Double-click "Network Connections" (If you don't see it, click "Switch to Classic View")
  4. Double-click your active connection, and then click "Properties"
  5. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", and then click "Properties"
  6. Click "Advanced..."
  7. Click on the "DNS" tab
  8. Click "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)"
  9. Click "Add..."
  10. Type "dns-sd.org"
  11. Click "Add" "OK" "OK" "Close" "Close"

Now when you look in Internet Explorer (with Bonjour for Windows installed) you should see additional (non-local) services discovered in the Bonjour list:
